Binance suffers largest crypto hack in history with $6.4 billion in losses
Binance confirmed that it suffered a theft of approximately $6.3 billion, the largest security incident in the history of cryptocurrencies. The exchange announced that it has reserved $6.34 billion of its own funds to cover user losses, including the freezing of approximately $3 billion in stolen assets. Security analysis by firms TRM and Chainalysis attributes the attack to the TraderTraitor group, linked to North Korea, the same group responsible for the Bybit hack. On Ethereum, the attacker exploited a 2025 upgrade that enables smarter wallets, using 50 signatures from Binance's own wallet to drain approximately $2.5 billion. This is a critical event for the security of centralized exchanges and reinforces the importance of self-custody and hardware wallets for those who wish to control their own funds. The incident also highlights operational risks on large-scale platforms. https://www.coindesk.com/business/2026/10/30/binance-arranges-usd6-34-billion… https://decrypt.co/382224/trm-and-chainalysis-tie-6-4b-binance-hack-to-north-… https://www.coindesk.com/tech/2026/10/30/here-s-how-one-ethereum-permission-l… Do you have questions about how to protect your own Bitcoin in self-custody wallets?
