Bitget suffers $387 million attack; Circle and Tether freeze funds
The Bitget exchange confirmed an attack that resulted in losses of $387.5 million, with suspicions of involvement by actors linked to North Korea. The attacker forged internal transfer requests to drain hot and warm wallets from the platform. Circle and Tether responded quickly by blocking approximately $318 thousand in USDC and USDT associated with the attack, but most of the funds had already been converted to ETH before the freeze, making them unrecoverable through this mechanism. Bitget announced that it will present a withdrawal plan by September 26. The incident reinforces the importance of self-custody and the risks concentrated in centralized exchanges, even the largest ones.
