Topics vs chat: where to post what
One of the first things people get stuck on when running a community is figuring out where conversations should live. Should it go in a topic (forum section)? In the chat room? As a lesson? Here's how to think about it: - Topics are for things you want to find again. A question about how to set up a wallet, a guide on security, a debate about which exchange is easiest—these belong in topics because someone will search for them later, or new members will browse them to learn. - Chat rooms are for right now. Live events, quick questions, off-topic chat, reactions to news. Chat moves fast and disappears into the scroll. That's fine. It builds connection but doesn't create lasting knowledge. - Lessons are for teaching something step-by-step with a clear end. A course on crypto basics, a walkthrough of your product, a skill you want members to learn and track progress on. The trick is: when people post in chat that should have been in a topic, gently move it. When chat topics get long and valuable, copy the best bits into a proper topic post so they don't get lost. And when chat gets too chatty for what you're trying to teach, that's a sign you need a lesson. Most communities need all three. Chat feels fun and immediate. Topics feel like a library. Lessons feel like growth. Each one does a different job. What kind of conversations happen most in your community right now—are they finding the right home?
